Dear friends,
we are three members of the Italian Alpine Club living in the middle of the
Italian Alps.
Recently we have seen some pictures of the Altay Range and immediately loved
that place. Well, our idea is to go there to do some ski-mountaineering. We
have searched information concerning these mountains on books and on
internet as well, but we haven't found much. The ascent of Mt.Belukha itself
seems to be a mystery: we got a relation which states the maximum steepness
is 60° and another one stating it is 40-45°. What a difference!
If this poorness of information makes the place even more fascinating, on
the other hand it makes the trip planning more difficult. We have identified
our destination in the Akkem Valley in late spring ( the month of may could
be OK? ), but to be honest we still have many doubts. In fact we don't know
if the area is suitable for that kind of activity and which kind of
difficulties we have to expect in terms of access, climate, technical
difficulties, costs and so on. And what about the organization? May we
manage the expedition by ourself or it is advisable to be supported by a
local agency, guides, helicopter etc.? And more: is the Altay Range an usual
destination for the Russian skiers or we have to expect to be alone down
there? Well, we hope you will help us to clear these doubts.
And please, don't hesitate to give us any further information you think can
be useful.
